Film: Michael
I still can't quite believe I saw Iron Maiden before Michael Jackson. But here we are. I bought my nephews their first MJ records when they were young (they're in their 40s now) and they were lucky enough to see the one-gloved wonder live.
Having grown up with the Jackson Five amongst the other early 70s giants, this was a must-see, even if two films with limited releases had to come first.
Worth the wait. I can see why it has become such a big hit. Besides being one of the most popular artists of all time, it was wonderful to see his musical beginnings play out on the big screen. Michael is played by his real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson, in his film debut, and he is uncannily brilliant.
The portrayal of Joe Jackson by Colman Domingo is relentless, from the abuse, the control, to the money, the film doesn't shy away from any of it. Which is interesting, bearing in mind the production was overseen by the family, although Janet Jackson was very obviously absent.
Which leaves you wondering whether the magic he created was despite all of that, or because of it.
I loved seeing MJ find his people, the ones who truly got him, unlike his father. Though Jeffrey Daniels of Shalamar, who famously taught him the moonwalk, was notably left out of what is clearly part one of the MJ story. I’m not sure if I want to see the next instalment or just remember him with joy.
Despite that, seeing the Thriller vidoe come together, whether that was an accurate depiction or not was pure joy.
I went for the magic. I got it.
8/10
P.S. Don't Stop Till You Get Enough featured heavily and brilliantly in the film. As I hit send, it came on the radio.
