Film: Marty Supreme

In a low year for cinema releases, I ended it by seeing a film I did not know or was not interested in.

Marty is a young shoe salesperson in the 1950s who decided he was the best table tennis player in the world and set out to prove it. So far, so good. Except Marty was a ruthless, arrogant American (in case you hadn’t guessed), and this turned out to be one of those films where I have no fondness for any character; if I can’t root for anyone, I don’t enjoy the film.

Additionally, I couldn’t get past the decision to have an 1980s soundtrack for a 1950s film.

I overheard the people coming out behind me declaring it was a great film when I came out empty, so that’s something.
