Film: Eternity
This gentle comedy tells the story of Joan, who after death, meets her long-term husband, Larry, waiting for her in the in-between space. His death was an accident, she came along a few days later from her sick bed and Larry wants them to go to an eternity together. The only thing is, also waiting for her for decades is her first love, Luke, who died in the Korean War. Who does she choose? Like everyone, she has a week to decide.
The comedy element comes from all the promoters selling their flavour of eternity (mountains, beaches, women only, Paris) like you are buying a holiday instead of where you want to spend an eternity. I like that everyone is assigned an afterlife coordinator, who bring the main humour to the film. Seemingly, these jolly people are those who have stayed in the holding pen and not gone to an eternity. And that everyone arrives at the ‘junction at the age when they were the happiest; sadly there are very few oldies.
No one discusses how billions of people fit into Eternities or how there are so many people staying in the limbo space, and why do the people hard-sell their eternities; do they get some kind of commission?
I find the idea of eternity frightening - there needs to be an end time or we wouldn't achieve anything. So I had to look past that to enjoy this film.
