Film: Jaws

I was excited to see the original film for the first time on the big screen. I have never seen it on TV so I had to put on my 70s rose-tinted glasses, as this 50-year-old movie is very much a product of its time.

Set in a small town, possibly in Connecticut, the film reflects a distinctly American attitude where business comes first.. The mayor refuses to close the beach during the busy summer season, fearing the traders will lose most of the annual income, even after someone has already been killed by a shark.

Alongside an oceanographer and seasoned shouty shark hunter, the non-swimming police chief are deemed the best trio to go and hunt down the shark in a tiny boat.

One thing that stood out to me was the iconic music; it gave away when the shark was about to appear, which wiped out much of the tension.

It was great to see such a groundbreaking film - a slice of the 70s - on the big screen, experiencing it as it was rather than through a modern lens.

7/10
