Film - The Laundromat

Tax evasion is a crime. But tax avoidance, that's what put us in business. And the line between the two, we like to say, it's as thin as a jailhouse wall.

Widower Ellen Martin (Meryl Streep) wants to buy a specific property that held nostalgic memories for her with her insurance payout. She encounters that the insurance won’t pay out and goes on what I think we can call it an adventure to find out what’s going on.

This film is about money. It throws light in the lightest way possible on how the how some of the world’s rich jump through loopholes to keep hold of it. Laundromat brings a complicated web home using seemingly unrelated subplots such as the guy negotiating a dubious deal with a Chinese business owner and the African millionaire bribing his daughter with one of his businesses to keep her from telling her mother about his infidelity with her best mate.

The two men (Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas) who run an organisation that helps wealthy people with a web of fake companies narrate the story which provides a good balance to what could easily be a one-sided story.

With some beautiful scenery thrown in, this is entertaining as it is informative.
