Movie: Whiplash

I was fortunate to see this a few days before the release date and now that other people have seen it, all they are talking about is the tension.I didn’t hold my breath as much as others but on the other hand, I wasn't reaching for my phone to check the time either. The story of a young drummer at a ruthless music school that wants to be the (worlds) best just like his jazz idols and the renowned teacher that bullies his students in an attempt to find the world’s best musicians. So, it’s an ideal match. The film moves at a great pace with the right amount of tension, dialogue and music – although not as loud as I thought it would be so I still had to choose my moments to get the movie sweets out. The story opens up around the family dinner table where as my bf pointed out, it get Sorkin-esque. (I’m a massive West Wing and The Newsroom fan). Some of the violence (bullying) towards the students is quite tough to take, but hey, you get used to it as the film rolls on. You are left wondering whether the drummer is as bad as the teacher but in the end, I’m still on the student’s side. It’s a faultless film although I’m unsure if I need to watch it again.8/10Smile factor 4/10
