Movie – San Andreas

San Francisco gets it again. It seems as though they only build the vast bridges and tall buildings so they can be featured in disaster movies. This time it’s a 9+ earth quake which just keeps on giving, just to make sure the really expensive, built to withstand, tall buildings do make it down to rubble too.We are introduced to the rescue heroes first before being taken by the hand to the earth quake boffins who explain exactly what is going to happen despite no one believing them in the past.Still it’s nice that search and rescue helicopter pilot, Ray (it’s that Dwayne Johnson bloke) can just grab a helicopter to rescue his soon to be ex-wife and daughter. They have the all so familiar, why couldn’t we make it work when we’re such good friends?, look about them but she is now with a fancy new man (who we sense is nowhere near as nice as the ex). Ray is struggling to come to terms with the empty family home as his daughter is about to go to university. But she stuck around for the disaster. So with the scene set, we await the quake but actually, the film does take you in its rescue hand grip for almost 2 hours, there is no let-up on the tension, even during the quite, emotional family bits.As a side line, there is a non-story in the Sunday Times about leading ladies now being as old as the male or even older (in this case by a whole 8 months, whoopee!). Yes we have come long way with selecting women in – shock horror – their 40s playing characters in their 30s considering Humphrey Bogart was cast opposite women young enough to be his daughter and then some.7/10Smile 6/10
