Film: Wicked Little Letters

This mercifully short British comedy is such a silly film I find it hard to fathom it’s based on a true story. I’m sure you know it; the trailer is the most shown of the year.

About young mother Rose (Jessie Buckley) who moved into the seaside town of Littlehampton. Her neighbour is unmarried Edith (Olivia Colman) living with her super traditional and religious parents. Their friendship ends and prim and proper Edith starts receiving vulgar letters which it are assumed from the known to be foul mouthed Rose. From here the film becomes a classic whodunnit involving the talents of a young ‘lady copper’ Gladys and no-talent senior police men.

Wicked Little Letters is very much a dark comedy although I can only imagine it wasn’t much fun for Rose in prison in the 1920s.

It’s a fast, easy watch though with a starry cast including Edith’s terrifying father played brilliantly by Timothy Spall.
