Film: Past Lives

Another one of my international films showing only in the little Odeon (Although subsequently, it has been picked up by more cinemas).

Having read the Japanese book Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, I thought Past Lives would be about - well that. Instead, this Korean film is about two childhood friends separated when Nora’s family emigrated to the US.

They don’t see each other again but a decade later find each other once they’ve reached adulthood via an online search. It is some years after that, when Nora is married that they finally meet again when she is a writer living in New York. We are left to wonder if is it possible to be childhood friends and still hold a spark for each other or will Nora’s happy marriage stay that way.

Enjoyable.
