Film - Mrs Harris Goes to Paris

Well, this is better than I expected. It had an extra little pull as the main character is played by Lesley Manville (I especially love Mum).

The story of a war widow who is still pining for her husband several years after the war ended and falls in love with a stunning Dior dress while at one of the houses she cleans. Inspired, she sets about rather miraculously, saving enough money to both fly to Paris and buy a £500 (in 1957) dress. This would be upwards of £5000 now - they don’t have prices on haute couture so I’m guessing.
Yes, I did keep thinking you could buy a house for that. I also could not get past the fact that the Dior fashion show would not have had black and Asian models - so it lost half a mark.

However, don’t let that make you think I didn’t enjoy the film - it’s a wonderful watch that I will happily see again. I love positive and optimistic people who always think of others and that is Mrs Harrs - despite this bonkers dream. It’s always good to see a story about a traditional fashion house and Paris is always a good character to include. I gave the recent Gucci one a miss but did think about the Chanel one from a few years ago.

I hadn’t taken much notice of the trailer or promotional posters so her dress of choice is a pleasant surprise for me. The film made me go home and study all my Dior jewellery collection and make me want to wear it more often. It sure is a solid Dior advert.
