Film: Dumb Money

I wonder if there’s been a study of how many films are based on true stories.

Dumb Money is based on the book The Antisocial Network and tells the story of Keith Gill AKA ‘Roaring Kitty’, who played the markets and won. Won big, as did many of his social media followers as he broadcast his insights to the world.

We meet his family and learn the stories of some individuals investing, looking for their lives to change. It seemed like an easy idea for a film, and although it happened recently, I don't recall it occurring as recently as 2021. This was especially notable since it took place during the pandemic when I had plenty of time to observe what was happening in the world and was eager to discuss anything other than infection rates.

I appreciated the subplot of the bad boss of a Gamestop store and I willed their employee to invest so they could leave the job. The stories of the hedge fund manages are all too familiar and predictable.

I’m a fan of America Ferrera so it’s always great to see her on screen although I was left unclear about how her nurse character’s investment fared.

Pacy and watchable
