Film: The Materialists

I approached The Materialists with some reluctance, mainly due to its dating agency premise - a subject matter that rarely appeals to me. Unfortunately, my initial hesitations proved well-founded.

Despite what might have been an opportunity for gritty realism, the film is sparingly dusted with Hollywood fairy tale magic. The story trots along with alarming predictability, signalling its ending well before the credits roll.

I found myself completely disconnected from the characters; the sole exception was the ex-boyfriend, a struggling actor working as a waiter, though even this choice feels tellingly safe. Of course, it couldn't be a PA or dental hygienist; Hollywood demands its creative types maintain their artistic struggling-artist credentials.

Considering the enjoyable Past Lives is the last output from the director, The Materialists ultimately feels like a missed opportunity, prioritising glossy convention over genuine human connection.

PS Just noticed this was billed as a comedy.
