Film: The Amateur
After a few weeks without visiting the cinema, it feels good to be back. This film, unlike many that come and go, has managed to secure a longer run than anticipated, and frankly, I’m just relieved there’s something worth watching on the big screen.
I love a film about data, so the plot bodes well.
The story revolves around Charlie (Rami Malek) is a quiet data analyst type who digs up info at the CIA. He doesn’t necessarily know what they do with it, preferring to keep his head down. All is going as planned until his wife is tragically killed after being caught in the crossfire of a crime gone wrong in London. In a moment, his idyllic rural lifestyle vanishes and he seeks revenge.
The data nerd becomes the assassin without being able to throw a punch. How refreshing.
In a way, the film explores the transformation of a quiet, quintessential data nerd stepping into the role of an assassin, despite lacking any combat skills or street smarts. It’s a refreshing take on the genre, showcasing how an everyman might react when faced with the unimaginable—what does a nice person do when their loved one is brutally murdered?
