Film: Superman
I’m glad I returned to the Superman franchise with this latest film, especially as there is a superdog!
In yet another well-worn story of a tech billionaire who craves even more power and stirs chaos across the planet, Superman this time becomes the target of a slick, manipulative social media smear campaign.
My favourite moment? A little boy standing tall with a flagpole amongst invading soldiers, still keeping faith that Superman will rescue them, when we know the American government holds him captive.
Outside the Superman thread, it’s a very familiar tale of wealthy men using their influence to provoke wars so they can gain even more power.
I was especially pleased to see Lois Lane firmly cast as his girlfriend rather than an underwritten colleague or ambiguous love interest. Also, there’s a surprisingly satisfying explanation for why Clark Kent’s glasses genuinely conceal his identity.
Holding just the right amount of tension, this is solid family entertainment that I will happily watch again.
Let’s give it 8/10 as I haven’t done that much this year.
