Film: Back to the Future
I first saw Back to the Future 40 years ago at the UK’s first multiplex cinema - The Point, which is now facing demolition rather than being listed for preservation. This time, I left with the same smile and glow, along with the slice of optimism I had as a teenager, believing a magical life was ahead of me.
There are many iconic lines in this film, like ‘you’re kids are going to love it’ and others; they’ve become part of my language. Similarly, ‘we’re going to need a bigger boat’ from Jaws, which I only saw for the first time this year, as it was re-released in cinemas.
Back to the Future remains one of my all-time favourite films, if not my absolute favourite. I must have watched it at least 100 times, although I rarely start it from the beginning. It’s a film I watch whenever it’s on TV, no matter how far along it is
Back to the Future, like others from the era, such as Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club, is more than just a film to me; it represents a cherished slice of my youth filled with adventure, humour, and hope for the future.
It’s a reminder to embrace the possibilities, four decades on and the reason many of us became solid Michael J Fox fans.
I hope the anniversary re-release inspires another generation who can witness the magic unfold all over again.
10/10
(but I won’t count it in the best film of the year list)
