Book: My Legendary Girlfriend by Mike Gayle

Having loved The Museum of Ordinary People, I decided to explore Mike Gayle's back catalogue. I'm glad I did, though not entirely for the right reasons.

It is a credit to his writing that I got to the end of this book, because I disliked - actually despised the main character. His not-really-mates, more people-he-knew didn't fare much better. I found myself not rooting for him or them at all.

I kept waiting for a turning point. Some twists and turns sure helped, but I was puzzled by how someone could reach the age of 25 and not know where to buy pillows, even if I could get past the part where they had absolutely no budgeting and/or life skills whatsoever. How did he become a teacher?

The writing got me to the last page. The characters nearly stopped me from getting there.

Roll on to the next one!
