Film - Lightyear

June turns out to be a light month for cinema so this is a welcome highlight.

The Toy Story series' prequel tells us Buz Lightyear's story. Marooned for a year on a planet while they work out how to get back home, Captain Lightyear volunteers to do the four-minute test as he feels guilty for damaging their vessel resulting in them being marooned. His commander Alicia Hawthorne is also his best friend. The only thing is, by the time, he returns, four years have passed and Commander Hawthorne is now getting ready to start a family.

There was so much going on in the film,  I don’t remember many of those moments from the trailer I’ve just watched the first time.

Of course, I love that the most respected person in this film is a woman and there is no cute robot ever shown on screen that I haven’t fallen immediately in love with.

Lightyear is made for the grown-up Toy Story fans who have also grown up in a society where being a black gay parent does not stand out as unusual (hopefully).

As expected, the film is crammed with joy, humour and warmth wrapped up with themes of friendship and loyalty.
