Book: Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

A good holiday book read that I was able to dip in and out of on planes and trains during trips to Reykjavik and then onto Toronto.

Only now, when researching, did I learn they made it into a drama series. I’m glad I hadn’t seen anything about that, as this is definitely one where you don’t want spoilers.

The story of the privileged Richardson’s who are the third generation in this tiny town of xxx where nothing goes wrong.

Now they’ve let their rental house out to a mother and daughter, Mia and Pearl, who we soon learn are always on the move so have very little belongings. Mia is an artist who makes ends meet through odd jobs and teen Pearl who has been promised that this time they’ll stay. So for the first time, she makes a friend, one of the 4 Richardson kids, Moody.

My favourite storyline in this book is when one of the kids, Izzy, takes a liking to Mia, who is nice to her, but her own mother treats her like a mistake that cannot be fixed. So Pearl spends all of her free time with Moody, wishing she was one of the Richardsons in their big house and full American fridge, and Izzy does the same being fascinated by Mia, and playing the part of an artist's assistant.

As each character’s story unfolds deep into the book, we get an inkling of why they all behave the way they do—just an inkling.

A good charity shop find.
