Movie – Our Kind of Traitor

I’ve just read the blurb on the Cineworld site and I’m sensing I saw a different film. The British couple I saw on the screen appeared to be married, the Russian mafia associate appeared more creepy than charismatic and I would call their journey silly, if tortuous.Let me start at the beginning.A couple are having problems and go on holiday to get it back together. Perry (Ewan McGregor) is a professor and Gail a much better paid barrister. So one would think, a smart couple.No.While Gail takes a call (that’s not going to get your marriage back on track) she leaves Perry in an expensive bar with a creepy bunch of Russian criminals, one of which befriends him. He ends up going to a luxe party with the Russians (not going to get your marriage back either). Next day, he sees the Russian again, on his own but leaves a note for his tolerant wife who eventually catches up, elegantly ignoring the elephant in the room.So several sloppy mistakes in the slow, opening scenes does not bode well. I took a rare glance at my phone for a time check (thankfully I hadn’t turned it completely off – maybe I knew the film was going to be lacklustre) and it was a full hour since the film’s official start time to when the thriller bit of this film started. As the blurb says, obviously at some point the Russian hands over some evidence to the wretched, drippy Perry to take back to London and the delayed fun begins. With all the mistakes, the film is watchable only for the Russian (Stellan Skarsgård) and the determined, public-school boy MI6 agent (Damian Lewis). The only believable storyline in this film is about all the bent politicians.6/10 @RickieWrites
